James P. Pottorff

James P. Pottorff, Jr. has over 30 years’ experience providing legal advice and counsel to complex organizations, including over 17 years as General Counsel and Vice Chancellor at the University of Kansas.  In this position he served as the principal legal advisor to the Chancellor and other senior administrators of a comprehensive research university with 28,000 students on five campuses.  His duties included responsibility for legal advice on all university operational matters, including investigations covering personnel matters, Title IX compliance, and intercollegiate athletics.

Prior to his position with the University of Kansas, Jim completed a 25 plus year career as an officer in the Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps.  His positions included Deputy General Counsel at the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY.  At West Point, he was responsible for the day to day provision of legal services, including employment law, sexual harassment law, labor law, student discipline, and intellectual property law as well as advice and oversight of investigations.

In addition, Jim served as the General Counsel of the 10th Mountain Division and Ft. Drum, NY, consisting of an Army division and a military installation with 10,500 soldiers and 2,000 civilian employees.  Supervising a legal staff of 21 attorneys, 38 paralegals, and 28 support personnel, he managed all legal advice to the division and installation, including employment law, contracting, environmental compliance, and a wide variety of investigations.

Jim is a graduate of the US Military Academy, West Point, NY, earning a B.S. degree in general engineering and inclusion on the Dean’s list.  He received his J.D. from the University of Kansas School of Law, Lawrence, KS, where he was an Articles Editor of the University of Kansas Law Review and a member of the Moot Court Council.  Jim earned an M.A. degree in national security and strategic studies from the Naval War College, Newport, RI, graduating with highest distinction, finishing 1st out of 128 senior U.S. military leaders. He holds an LL.M degree in administrative law from the Army JAG School, Charlottesville, VA where he was an honor graduate.  Additionally, he earned an M.A. degree in human resources management from Pepperdine University, Malibu, CA.
