Kevin W. Techau’s 35-year career in both the public and private sectors includes extensive litigation, in-house counsel work, gubernatorial-cabinet leadership and military experience. He is known as a trusted advisor to CEOs, a governor, corporate officers, and political and military leaders on public policy, complex litigation, strategic planning, internal investigations, leadership, and federal/state regulatory matters.
Kevin served as the presidentially appointed United States Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa from 2014-2017. He led strategic planning and tactical coordination of federal and state investigative agencies to deploy resources for all criminal and civil matters in which the federal government was involved. Those matters included gun crimes; healthcare fraud, cybercrime, national security, political corruption, corporate and bank fraud, environmental crimes, and tax evasion. He organized and convened more than 50 forum meetings with community members and business, financial, education, public health, law enforcement, and medical executives to identify and deploy federal tools and resources to address cybercrime, the heroin opioid epidemic, violent crime prevention, arson investigation, railroad safety, financial services fraud, hate crime, and offender reentry issues.
As a member of Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack’s cabinet, Kevin served as Commissioner of the Iowa Department of Public Safety and Director of the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals.
He spent seven years as Associate General Counsel at American Equity Investment Life Insurance Company where he represented the interests of the company in state and federal courts and before state insurance departments while managing all company litigation.
Kevin served as a Judge Advocate with the United States Air Force for seven years. After leaving active duty, he served with the Iowa Air National Guard for 20 years. He retired from the Iowa Air National Guard after 27 years of highly decorated military service.
Kevin was the recipient of numerous public accolades, including the University of Iowa Public Health Heroes Award, the Blank Children’s Hospital Safe Kids Iowa Leadership Award, and the Greater Des Moines Partnership Government Leadership Award.
Kevin is a graduate of the University of Iowa College of Business and College of Law. He completed the Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government Program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government.
